Coal India Limited recruitment 2026 has been one of the biggest PSU hiring years in recent memory. Coal India Limited (CIL) opened 936 Management Trainee posts at headquarters level: 660 through a computer-based test (CBT) and 276 Mining posts through GATE-2025 scores. Its subsidiaries notified another 3,772 regular posts, from Mining Sirdars and Assistant Foremen to HEMM operators and staff nurses, and about 3,450 apprentice seats on top of that.
That makes roughly 4,700 regular jobs and over 8,000 openings in all across the Coal India group in 2026. The 660-post MT CBT was held on 24 August 2026; its answer key is out, and the result is awaited.
This guide brings every Coal India drive into one place: what is open, what has closed, who can apply, how selection works (GATE or CBT), and what each post pays. Whether you hold a B.Tech, a diploma, a DGMS certificate or an ITI, start here.

Coal India Limited is a Schedule “A” Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Coal, headquartered in Kolkata. It produces around 75% of India’s coal and employs about 2.09 lakh people (as stated in CIL’s August 2026 advertisement). It works through seven coal-producing subsidiaries (ECL, BCCL, CCL, NCL, WCL, SECL and MCL) and a planning and design arm, CMPDI.

Counting only one drive or one company understates the year badly. Here is the full picture for notices issued in the calendar year 2026.

Coal India publishes CIL-level notices only on its official website, under Career with CIL → Jobs at Coal India. Subsidiaries publish on their own websites. The key 2026 documents are:
CIL ran two Management Trainee drives in 2026, both notified on 5 May. Both lead to the same job (Management Trainee in E-1 grade, ₹60,000–₹1,80,000), but the route to selection is different.
Advt. No. 01/2026 picked Mining engineers based on their GATE-2025 Mining (MN) paper score. There was no separate written test.
Table: CIL MT (Mining) vacancies, Advt. No. 01/2026
| UR | EWS | SC | ST | OBC (NCL) | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 114 | 27 | 41 | 20 | 74 | 276 |
Only GATE-2025 scores counted. The next Mining drive will use GATE-2027 scores (Advt. No. 06/2026). CIL has not announced an intake based on GATE-2026 scores.
Advt. No. 03/2026 covered nine disciplines and selected candidates on CBT marks only, with no interview.
Engineering branches (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, System, E&T, Industrial Engineering) sat alongside Geology, Rajbhasha (Hindi) and Company Secretary. Unlike 2025, there were no Finance, HR, Legal, Marketing or Materials Management posts in the 2026 cycle.
Table: CIL MT discipline-wise and category-wise vacancies, Advt. No. 03/2026
| Discipline (post code) | UR | EWS | SC | ST | OBC (NCL) | Backlog | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Civil (11) | 72 | 17 | 26 | 13 | 46 | 4 | 178 |
| Electrical (12) | 91 | 22 | 33 | 16 | 59 | – | 221 |

| Company Secretary (19) | 3 | – | 1 | – | – | – | 4 |
| Total | 278 | 61 | 94 | 45 | 169 | 13 | 660 |
That is 647 fresh vacancies plus 13 backlog vacancies, making 660. The notice also reserves 64 seats for PwBD candidates (including backlog), spread across the disciplines on a horizontal basis.
Yes, the subsidiaries recruit separately, and in 2026 they hired more people than CIL headquarters. CIL’s MT drives fill officer posts across all subsidiaries. Each subsidiary also runs its own drives, mostly for statutory and supervisory posts (Mining Sirdar, Overman, Surveyor, Assistant Foreman) and technical and paramedical staff under the National Coal Wage Agreement (NCWA-XI).
Table: Coal India subsidiaries, headquarters and 2026 recruitment
| Subsidiary | Headquarters | 2026 drives | Official website |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) | Singrauli, MP | 270 Assistant Foreman (Feb–Mar); 577 HEMM Operator, Paramedical and Overseer (Apr–May; CBT 6 Jul); 259 Mining Sirdar and Surveyor (Jul–Aug); 1,607 apprentices (Jun) | nclcil.in · Mining Sirdar notice PDF |
| South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) | Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh | 1,055 Mining Sirdar, Deputy Surveyor and Assistant Foreman (CBT 2 Jul; result 10 Sep); 1,700 apprentices (Mar) | secl-cil.in |
| Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) | Sambalpur, Odisha | 667 statutory posts: Jr. Overman 192, Mining Sirdar 448, Surveyor 24, Translator 1, Technician (Pathology) 2 (Mar–Apr); 500 Assistant Foreman and Technician trainees (May) | mahanadicoal.in · May notice PDF |
| Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) | Nagpur, Maharashtra | 444 Mining Sirdar and Assistant Foreman (CBT 14 Oct; answer key 17 Oct) | westerncoal.in · notice PDF |
| Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) | Ranchi, Jharkhand | No open-market regular drive yet in 2026. Last large intake: 1,180 apprentices (applications 3–24 Oct 2025) | centralcoalfields.in |
| Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) | Dhanbad, Jharkhand | No open-market regular drive in 2026. Notices were for departmental (internal) selections for existing employees, plus 2 CS Executive Programme trainee posts (May–Jun) | bcclweb.in |
| Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) | Sanctoria, West Bengal | 140 ITI apprentices (Jun–Jul); 10 Medical Specialist Consultants on contract (closed 7 Apr) | easterncoal.nic.in |
| CMPDI | Ranchi, Jharkhand | Contract Advisor posts and an advocate empanelment (applications 30 Oct–15 Nov 2026) only | cmpdi.co.in |
Why CCL, BCCL, ECL and CMPDI show no regular drive: these companies filled 2026 needs mainly through CIL’s MT pool, apprenticeships and internal promotions. They advertise open-market posts irregularly. CCL, for instance, last ran a large external drive for Mining Sirdar, Deputy Surveyor, Electrician and Assistant Foreman posts in 2023. Bookmark their careers pages if you are from Jharkhand or West Bengal.
The rules below are drawn from the 2026 subsidiary notices (WCL, NCL, SECL and MCL). Each notice sets its own exact terms, so always check the one you are applying to.
Table: Coal India subsidiary posts 2026, minimum qualification
| Post | Grade | Minimum qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Mining Sirdar | T&S Grade C | Matriculation + valid DGMS Mining Sirdar Certificate of Competency + valid Gas Testing and First Aid certificates or Diploma/Degree in Mining Engineering + valid DGMS Overman Certificate + Gas Testing and First Aid certificates. WCL also asked for 3 years’ underground experience on the Sirdar certificate route. |
| Junior Overman | T&S Grade C | Diploma or Degree in Mining Engineering + valid unrestricted DGMS Overman Certificate + valid First Aid and Gas Testing certificates (MCL) |
| Surveyor / Deputy Surveyor | T&S Grade B (NCL, MCL) / Grade C (SECL) | Matriculation, or a Diploma/Degree in Mining or Mine Surveying, + valid Surveyor’s Certificate of Competency |
| Assistant Foreman (Electrical) / Electrical Supervisor | T&S Grade C | 3-year Diploma in Electrical Engineering; WCL also required an Electrical Supervisory Certificate valid for mines |
| Assistant Foreman (Mechanical / E&T) | T&S Grade C | Matriculation + 3-year Diploma in the relevant branch (NCL) |
| Technician (Electrician) (Trainee) | Cat-III | Matriculation + 2-year ITI (Electrician) + 1 year’s training/experience + LT permit for mines (MCL) |
| HEMM Operator (Trainee) (Dumper, Dozer, Grader, Crane, Pay Loader, Surface Miner) | – | Class 10 + valid Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) licence (NCL) |
| Staff Nurse (Trainee) | T&S Grade C | 10+2 + B.Sc Nursing or GNM diploma, with registration (NCL) |
| Overseer (Civil) | T&S Grade C | Class 10 + 3-year Diploma in Civil Engineering (NCL) |
Two rules apply across almost every subsidiary notice. First, restricted DGMS certificates are not accepted where the posts cover both underground and opencast mines. Second, distance or part-time diplomas do not count.
Table: Coal India subsidiary recruitment 2026, age rules (WCL notice; others similar)
| Category | Upper age limit |
|---|---|
| UR / EWS | 30 years (minimum 18) |
| OBC (NCL) | 33 years |
| SC / ST | 35 years |
| PwBD (UR / OBC / SC-ST), where the post is identified for PwBD | 40 / 43 / 45 years |
| Ex-Servicemen | Service period + 3 years (UR/EWS), 6 years (OBC) or 8 years (SC/ST), up to 50 |
| CIL and subsidiary employees | No upper age limit |
Age is counted on the last date of application. Mining Sirdar posts are not identified for PwBD candidates under CIL’s 2024 guidelines, so there is no PwBD reservation for them.
UR, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates pay ₹1,180 (₹1,000 + ₹180 GST) online. SC, ST, PwBD, Ex-Servicemen and departmental candidates pay nothing, and SECL also exempted women candidates in 2026.
*All application fees to be paid on the Official Website of the Employer ONLY.
Table: Coal India subsidiary CBT pattern 2026
| Company | Questions/marks | Duration | Split | Qualifying marks (UR-EWS / OBC / SC-ST) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WCL | 100 / 100 | 90 minutes | General Aptitude 20 + Technical 80 | 50 / 45 / 40 |
| NCL (Mining Sirdar, Surveyor) | 100 / 100 | 90 minutes | Technical 70 + General 30 | As per notice |
| MCL | 100 / 100 | 2 hours | General Awareness/Aptitude 20 + Technical 80 | 45 / 40 / 35 |
| SECL | 100 / 100 | As per notice | Technical 80 + General Awareness/Aptitude 20 | 45 / 40 (OBC and ESM) / 35 |
All four drives used one-mark questions, no negative marking and bilingual papers (English and Hindi). There is no interview. Candidates are shortlisted for DV in each category at about three times the vacancies, then sent for a medical exam. WCL breaks ties by date of birth (older first), then alphabetically by first name.
Apprenticeships are the biggest entry point by numbers. They are one-year training seats under the Apprentices Act, 1961, with a monthly stipend and merit-based selection (usually on marks, with no exam). They do not guarantee a permanent job, but the experience counts for later subsidiary drives.
Table: Coal India apprenticeships and trainee schemes, 2025-26 and 2026-27
| Company | Scheme | Seats | Application window | How to apply |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SECL | Graduate and Technician apprentices 2026-27 | 1,600 (incl. 900 Technician-Mining, 200 Graduate-Mining) | 17–31 Mar 2026 | NATS portal + secl-cil.in |
| SECL | Fresher apprentices | 100 | Up to 31 Mar 2026 | NAPS portal |
| NCL | Graduate, Diploma, Trade (ITI) and Paramedical apprentices 2026-27 | 1,607 | 1–15 Jun 2026 | nclcil.in (stipend up to ₹13,700) |
| ECL | ITI apprentices (Fitter, Electrician, Welder) | 140 | 25 Jun–31 Jul 2026 | Offline, NAPS-registered candidates |
| CIL and all subsidiaries | Industrial Trainee (CA/CMA Intermediate) | 125 | 26 Dec 2025–15 Jan 2026 | coalindia.in (₹22,000 a month for 15 months) |
| CCL | Trade, Fresher, Technician and Graduate apprentices 2025-26 | 1,180 | 3–24 Oct 2025 | NAPS/NATS + centralcoalfields.in |
| WCL | Graduate, Diploma, Trade and Fresher apprentices 2025-26 | 1,213 | 17–30 Nov 2025 | westerncoal.in |
CCL and WCL notified their last apprentice batches in October–November 2025, so the 2026-27 cycle for these two may open soon. Register on the NAPS (apprenticeshipindia.gov.in) and NATS (nats.education.gov.in) portals in advance.
Coal India also hires experienced professionals, usually in small numbers:
The rules below come from the two CIL MT notices of 2026. For subsidiary posts, see the subsidiary eligibility section above.
Table: Coal India MT 2026 eligibility by discipline
| Discipline | Qualification | UR, EWS, OBC (NCL) | SC, ST, PwBD |

| System | First-class BE/B.Tech/B.Sc (Engg) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or IT, or a first-class degree with MCA | First class | First class |
| Electronics & Telecommunication | BE/B.Tech/B.Sc (Engg) in E&T, E&C, Electronics & Instrumentation or Electronics Instrumentation & Control | 60% | 55% |
| Geology | M.Sc or M.Tech in Geology, Applied Geology, Geophysics or Applied Geophysics | 60% | 55% |

| Company Secretary | Graduate in any discipline, plus ICSI Associate or Fellow membership; listed-company experience preferred | – | – |
A few rules catch people out:
The upper age limit is 30 years as on 30 April 2026 for UR and EWS candidates, in both MT notices.
Table: Coal India MT 2026 age relaxation
| Category | Relaxation | Upper age limit |
|---|---|---|
| UR / EWS | – | 30 years |
| OBC (NCL) | 3 years | 33 years |
| SC / ST | 5 years | 35 years |
| PwBD (UR / OBC / SC-ST), Advt. 03/2026 | 10 / 13 / 15 years | 40 / 43 / 45 years |
| Ex-Servicemen | As per Government of India rules | – |
| CIL and subsidiary employees | No upper age limit | – |
Nobody can be older than 56 on 30 April 2026, whatever the relaxation. The GATE notice (Advt. 01/2026) also gives 5 years’ relaxation to candidates domiciled in Jammu & Kashmir between 1 January 1980 and 31 December 1989.
It depends on the route:
Applications for both 2026 MT drives are closed. The process below is the one CIL used, and it is a good guide for the next window. Subsidiary drives follow a very similar online process on each company’s own website.
Do not post hard copies to CIL. Everything is online.
To apply (as self-attested PDFs): recent colour passport-size photo (no more than 3 weeks old, JPG/JPEG); signature in black ink; Class 10 certificate as date-of-birth proof; all semester or year marksheets in a single PDF; final or provisional degree certificate; CGPA conversion certificate if applicable; caste, EWS or PwBD certificate (with UDID card) if applicable; and an NOC if you work in a government body or PSU. Company Secretary applicants also need their ICSI membership certificate. Subsidiary applicants must add their DGMS competency, gas testing, first aid or electrical supervisory certificates as relevant.
If shortlisted: the originals of all of the above at document verification, followed by the Initial Medical Examination.
Table: Coal India MT 2026 application fee
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| UR, OBC (creamy and non-creamy layer), EWS | ₹1,180 (₹1,000 + ₹180 GST), online, non-refundable |
| SC, ST, CIL and subsidiary employees | Nil |
| PwBD (Advt. 03/2026) | Nil |
Applications for the 2026 MT drives are closed. Track results and future openings on coalindia.in, and let us tell you when the next window opens. Visit coalindia.in | [Register for Coal India Job Alerts on PreparEdge]
This is where most websites get confused, because the answer depends on the drive.
Table: How Coal India selects candidates, by drive
| Drive | How you are selected | Interview? |
|---|---|---|
| MT (Mining), Advt. 01/2026 | GATE-2025 Mining score → shortlisting at 1:3 per category → DV → Initial Medical Examination | No |
| MT (9 other disciplines), Advt. 03/2026 | CBT marks only → DV → Initial Medical Examination | No |
| MT (Mining), next cycle, Advt. 06/2026 | GATE-2027 Mining score | Details in the 2027 advertisement |
| Subsidiary statutory, technical and paramedical posts | CBT → DV (3× vacancies) → medical | No |
| Apprenticeships | Merit on qualifying marks → DV → medical | No |
| Lateral and senior posts (GM E-8) | Shortlisting on qualification and experience scores → personal interview (final selection on interview marks) | Yes |
The method has also changed over the years. CIL used GATE scores for several engineering disciplines in 2022, 2023 and 2024, and a CBT for non-engineering MT disciplines in 2025. In 2026, it switched most engineering disciplines to a CBT and kept GATE for Mining. Always check the selection clause in the notification for your drive.
In the GATE route, ties are broken by the higher percentage in your qualifying degree, then by age (older first). In the CBT route for Company Secretary, ties go to candidates who have worked in a listed company. An offer letter is issued only after you clear both DV and the medical exam.
The 2026 MT CBT was a single 3-hour sitting with two papers.
Table: Coal India MT CBT 2026 exam pattern
| Paper | Subjects | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper I | General Knowledge/Awareness, Reasoning, Numerical Ability, General English | 100 | 100 |
| Paper II | Professional knowledge of your discipline | 100 | 100 |
| Total | 200 | 200 (3 hours) |
For topic-wise details, see PreparEdge’s Coal India MT syllabus and exam pattern guide. The subsidiary CBT pattern is covered in the subsidiary section above.
